I don't 'believe' anything until I have enough evidence.
Admittedly, being cooped up like that made me think some pretty nutty theories. That the 'Russians' were not actually Russians isn't that nutty. I'm not trying to make a 'grassy knoll' or "moon landing was a hoax" conspiracy theory here, but just--
We've got a pretty limited view of world politics: we're fed what the US tells us when we arrive, what one generation of imPorts manages to uncover, record, and hand off, and what little we're exposed to. In my world, the Cold War is over by now. Yes, 'Russian did it' is the most logical answer to our sub voyage, but I don't know.
You're right not to blindly trust what the American government tells us. Where I'm from, the Cold War never happened, so I admit the finer points of US-Russia relations in this particular political climate may be a bit lost to me.
On the other hand, it's my understanding that the Russian government did, in fact, take responsibility for the kidnappings. If that's true, then there's little anyone can say concerning Russia's hand in the matter, regardless of whether actual Russians were manning that submarine or not.
We're absolutely SURE they were legitly the Russian government? No, I know, okay. It sounds stupid and it probably IS stupid, but what better way to make us willingly choose to fight the United State's war on the side of the US than to give us first-hand reasons to hate the Russians? The enemy of my enemy is my ally, or some Art of War shit like that. We weren't inspired to fight beside the Americans just by being ASKED to fight and given luxuries, so they gave us reason to fight.
It's possible, but...if you check online sources from other countries, they report the same story. The U.S. government would have to maintain a tight control over not just American media, but news outlets in foreign countries as well.
I realize it fits a bit too neatly into the narrative we've been fed by our hosts. For the time being, though, I'm ready to accept that these are the legitimate actions of the Russian government.
