Admittedly, being cooped up like that made me think some pretty nutty theories. That the 'Russians' were not actually Russians isn't that nutty. I'm not trying to make a 'grassy knoll' or "moon landing was a hoax" conspiracy theory here, but just--
We've got a pretty limited view of world politics: we're fed what the US tells us when we arrive, what one generation of imPorts manages to uncover, record, and hand off, and what little we're exposed to. In my world, the Cold War is over by now. Yes, 'Russian did it' is the most logical answer to our sub voyage, but I don't know.

On the other hand, it's my understanding that the Russian government did, in fact, take responsibility for the kidnappings. If that's true, then there's little anyone can say concerning Russia's hand in the matter, regardless of whether actual Russians were manning that submarine or not.

I realize it fits a bit too neatly into the narrative we've been fed by our hosts. For the time being, though, I'm ready to accept that these are the legitimate actions of the Russian government.
