It's possible, but...if you check online sources from other countries, they report the same story. The U.S. government would have to maintain a tight control over not just American media, but news outlets in foreign countries as well.

I realize it fits a bit too neatly into the narrative we've been fed by our hosts. For the time being, though, I'm ready to accept that these are the legitimate actions of the Russian government.
