It's too late to take anything back now, and it wouldn't be any way to start an engagement on muddled feelings and uncertainty. He searches Newton's eyes and brushes gentle fingertips over his cheek and scruffy jawline. Wants to offer reassurance of his own, and struggles with the words.

Some people wait years before they're ready to risk an engagement, and we have been moving very quickly in comparison. Some of this I can reason out by the length and depth of our working relationship, but Newton.. I want to be certain this new territory isn't fragile before we make anymore promises. Give me six to twelve months of this, and I will be ready."
And even that will be cutting it close. The ideal length of courtship is said to be one to three years before marriage, he knows, but he's willing to accept some level of risk given everything they'd seen each other through during the past five years. Somehow they didn't wind up murdering one another and that in itself is rather remarkable. Surely it says something about their constancy.
